SHAUN:  You need to tell me if I can have riot grrl knuckle tattoos. 

I'm bored of waiting. Plus when can I come up and see baby?

JOHANNA:don't you think you should ask kathleen??

SHAUN:I'm asking you if you think it really lame or really rad or if you are indifferent about the tattoos.

I'm going to ask kathleen to write riot grrl for me on paper...

If Saturday does not work, it's ok. But I'm gonna be with liza anyway.

JOHANNA: My questions are:

Do you wish you had gotten the tattoos in the early-mid 90's?

If you had gotten them then, would you have been happy with them for the past 10-15 years?

What percentage of this impulse is deep meaning via personal history and what part is 90's retro nostalgia.

If I didn't know you and saw you with the tattoos I guess I would think that it was somewhat cute/dorky but less so because of your age. . . your age makes it both intriguing and humorous (given my personal history with the term). Also why you would get them NOW would be interesting to me.

Given that I DO know you I would find it slightly embarrassing, like when you and dusty wore le tigre t-shirts to the electroclash show with me when you visited NYC. But likewise pretty genius in the perfect balance of insider irony and complete sincerity. I guess, as I write this, I am coming to the conclusion that it is fundamentally rad, and I admire your pride and ability to own your own history, dumb stuff and all. It is particularly remarkable especially because of the dominant self-effacing and chronically apologistic quality of riot grrl and indie rock culture of that time. You buy into the celebratory part of riot grrl/DIY/punkrock etc and NOT the "kick me" guilty shit. I like that about you.
