Shaun Surething of Seagull was chosen for the third year in a row to participate in the NYLON.COM fall hair makeovers, and we could not be giddier. As Luck would have it, Shaun was teamed up with Hayden (below) who wanted orange hair. Together, he and Shaun collectively took things a punch further, incorporating a variation of colors and tones to create a truly unbeatable overall orange. 

 

 

 

Hayden on his experience with Shaun: "So, I turned to my old friend bleach and said "hello" to the one color I’ve never had on top of my head: orange. Shaun Surething, the lead stylist at and co-owner of Seagull, is a true wizard of color and painted my Olaplex treatment-infused bleached hair with five different colors: coral on the sides; orange on the roots; mixtures of pinks and reds and oranges all over the top. He took a darker shade and defined each color section with a balayage technique, which added depth and texture. I’m particularly obsessed with the “natural” section he left that may or may not be inspired by a particular hair style Hayley Williams rocked in a certain Zedd music video that I showed during my consultation. (It totally is.) 

 

"I left Seagull thanking Shaun for bringing my queerness back. For, really, he and Warren have. A makeover is supposed to help bring out a new side of yourself, something fresh. For me, this has been more about exploring my younger self—a self I enviously look back on because of his fearlessness—with grown-up products and treatments. (No more DIY bleach jobs, cheap hair dye, and constant flat ironing for this head of hair.) Perhaps, one day, I’ll learn to love my curls. (I do happen to think they look nice in that before photo.) But it’s time to fall back into that fearless self I know is still alive and well. He just needed to be bleached out."

The latest issue of Time Out New York features the coolest and hottest queers around town, and it wouldn't be complete without Seagull's very own haircutting wizard and all-around sweetheart Topher Gross!

It's refreshing to read an issue devoted to queerness in such a widely-read NYC publication, clarifying the difference between "gay" and "queer". "To me, being queer is a state of consciousness rather than an identity," quotes the article. Very true words. It's a very Seagull-(and West Village-) appropriate issue to have on our coffee table: fabulously gay and inherently political.

Topher Gross is a freelance hairstylist with 10 years of experience in the beauty industry. He specializes in precision-based scissor and razor techniques which are designed to create beautiful, versatile, wearable hair for clients. He is known for cutting and styling curly/textured hair, short-edgy looks and tailored, masculine/barber-styles.

Previously a Top Stylist at Arrojo Studio, Topher cut thousands of clients, was an in-salon educator, a part of the show and seminar team for 9 years (IBS, ABS, Premiere) and worked on editorial and video shoots.

He has traveled to cut and style hair for clients all over the U.S., London and Berlin. Topher has been featured in Time Out NY, about.com, intothegloss.com, on various fashion blogs, DapperQ, GO magazine, and behindthechair.com. He was the lead hairstylist for the Brooklyn Girls Calendar series.

BALayage, baLAYage, balaYAGE - It's anyone's game - Chic Blondes, Mermaid Hair and Pastel Dreams

We've spoken about this before and we will speak about it again. Balayage is a technique used to highlight the hair in a way that mimics the effects of mild to wild exposure to sunlight, the beach, ocean-y salt water and even (EW) chlorine. But whatever. It is not going away anytime soon as it is the de rigueur mode of highlighting hair pretty much everywhere and now here in the U.S. 

Once hand-painted (balayage) highlights have been achieved, pretty much anything from My Little Pony hair to 1990's Gisele Bundchen Brazilian color can happen. Included here are excerpts from a Marie Claire interview with Jack Howard, international colorist based at Paul Edmonds about balayage. The interview covers how balayage is applied, achieved and attained. And interspersed are some pics of the way we have used balayage highlights here at Seagull Hair Salon to make mermaid hair, chic blonde highlights and pastel dreams. 

What is balayage?

Balayage is a French word meaning to sweep or to paint. It allows for a sun-kissed natural looking hair colour - similar to what nature gives us as children - with softer, less noticeable regrowth lines. The principal idea being less is more when creating soft, natural looks.

 

 

 

 

How is it applied? 

 

Balayage is applied on the surface and not saturated through the section until the very tips, otherwise you would have a streak of colour that isn’t vey soft at all. It can also be called a freehand technique because no foil or meche are used to create the highlights.

Does it require a lot of maintenance? 

Very little. It grows out beautifully and more naturally so you don’t get an obvious regrowth line and and can wear it for longer between appointments. All you really need to do is protect it as you would any other color: use a color protecting shampoo and conditioner, regular treatments and heat protection when styling.

What sets it apart from traditional hair colouring? 

It’s totally bespoke to you! A good balayage expert will be able to place the colour to suit your skin tone so it’ll look amazing and really light up your features. But don't get it confused with layage - a similar but more precise technique.

 

 

What's making it so popular recently?

It’s a skilled technique that hasn’t been widely taught in the UK until recently. Now it’s becoming better known because all the models and A-listers are wearing it. Clients are seeing it on the catwalks and red carpets and want to get that finish rather than the uniform highlights that foils give.

 What makes it timeless? 

It's low maintenance, looks more bespoke, more natural, and is a modern technique that’s much more flattering. Healthy hair is attractive hair and that’ll never go out of fashion. Balayage gives a gorgeous healthy finish that looks nature-enhanced, glossy and expensive. It can be natural or strong, whatever you want, it’s all about the application technique.

 

Is it suitable for all hair types/lengths?

It works on both light and dark hair, so anyone really. Both Rihanna and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley are great examples of balayage poster girls. I’m currently doing a technique called ‘bronde’ popular amongst celebs such as Jessica Alba and Olivia Palermo. It's the perfect combination of brown and blonde tones, bronde is perfect for darker haired clients who want to try out a lighter color, it can be warm neutral or cool. The choice is really between you and your colorist. Balayage pretty much works for all lengths except very short cropped hair.

Part II of Riot Grrrl Pioneer Fights to Keep Salon in Village Amid Skyrocketing Rents - Seagull In DNA.Info

DNAinfo New York sat down with Fateman and Cottle to talk about their fight to stay in the West Village despite sky-rocketing rents, how they've seen the neighborhood and the city change around them and what it means to run a feminist hair salon.

Talk about your commitment to staying in the neighborhood.

JF: It’s sort of ridiculous to talk about gentrification in this neighborhood anymore because it’s, like, the most expensive neighborhood in the city. But there’s this strange paradox where local independently owned businesses are why people want to live in the West Village, because there is McNulty’s [Tea & Coffee] and Seagull. So we’re trying to stay here and find a business model that works, that’s true to who we are but also can work in this climate. We have to constantly kind of go back to square one and be like, how can this work? How can we preserve the legacy of Seagull and its connection to gay liberation in this neighborhood and make something that can generate enough revenue to stay here? It hasn’t always been easy.

SC: I’m so proud that we are a business that has been here since 1971. Gentrification is behind us, urban blight is happening and we’ve managed to find a weird hole and dig ourselves into it, and we’ve managed to make it a really glamorous spot.

How has the neighborhood changed around you?

JF: I feel a lot of sadness to see these ground floor spaces taken up by these huge bank lobbies and by CVS. It just seems like the square footage is exorbitant and it really affects — the way we walk through this neighborhood is different. In that sense I was sad to leave the ground floor. There was something nice about having the storefront. But at least we’re still here.

SC: The other thing that’s sad that’s happening in this neighborhood is that landlords are like, "You can’t afford it, I want $25,000 a month" and then it just sits empty. It’s like, "Oh, congratulations on the huge profit you’re making."

JF: It changed too with the outrage of people who have bought into these luxury buildings, their outrage at the queer youth populations and communities that still hang out on Christopher Street and the Christopher Street piers and still have that as kind of a citywide destination for hanging out. We’ve had some arguments with people about that.

SC: I think the neighborhood is definitely less queer or the queers here are older. But because the queers haven’t died off there's some kind of weird bohemian energy hanging in the air still. I don’t know if it’s the ghost of HIV past or if it’s just like this neighborhood was so much entrenched with that spirit that no matter who moves here it still sort of feels that way.

Shaun SureThing has this to say about always disclosing the truth about what the condition of your hair is in: 

Please Don’t Lie
There’s probably nothing a colorist hates more than lying about previous dye jobs you may have had in the past. Whether you’ve done henna, a semi-permanent color or highlights, Shaun Surething, co-owner and lead stylist at New York–based Seagull Hair Salon, says there is definitely still existing color in your hair, making it extra important to be honest about your past color history.

“Lying about having no traces of color in your hair will result in unpredictable results in the salon,” says Surething. “Even the most well-trained colorists can sometimes not see an old gloss that will affect the outcome of your new color.”

We’d all like to think our hairstylist is a magical genie who is perfectly capable of granting any sort of hair wish. But truthfully speaking, our go-to stylists are only human, and can’t transform your tresses with the flick of a magic wand. And yes, you may think you know the ins and outs of everything hair, but maintaining appropriate salon etiquette is key to ensuring a great appointment for both you and your stylist.

Not only is seeing eye to eye crucial, but it can also help you achieve those wondrous (and not to mention realistic) results every time you pop into the salon. Very best and happy hair salon visits!

Seagull Salon Announces Endorsement of Seagull VIP and Poet Eileen Myles For President Plus Miscellaneous News Items

Seagull usually doesn't get involved with electoral politics, and has not officially endorsed a candidate since 1992 when Myles threw her hat in the ring and, before that, 1972 when we stood proudly behind the unbought and unbossed Shirley Chisholm. 

But, today, I read in the New York Times Magazine that Eileen Myles would consent be the POTUS if called upon by the American People. My heart filled with hope. Myles states, "I mean, if the voters rose up with a write-in campaign, then of course I would serve."

Here is an inflammatory highlight from her interview:

"I think it would be a great time for men, basically, to go on vacation. There isn’t enough work for everybody. Certainly in the arts, in all genres, I think that men should step away. I think men should stop writing books. I think men should stop making movies or television. Say, for 50 to 100 years."

While men should go on vacation, Myles has not had time to. This has been a busy year or so, full of literary and political accomplishments including the celebrated reissue of her canonical iconic Chelsea Girls, the publication of her poetry collection I Must Be Living Twice, and her totally postmodern cameo on Transparent in which she played witness to her fictionalized character performing her real poem. Speaking of Transparent, I am officially forecasting "Goth Moppa" as a 2016 fashion trend as well as the "Ali blouse," (any weird blouse) as a wardrobe staple. Oh, and I also recently learned that Myles is a 2016 Creative Capital awardee. Not to brag, but I got one of those grants—to write about art—last year. Plus I made it on Holland Cotter's top ten, NBD. Anyway, thank the goddess we can look forward to a collection of travel essays from Myles. Our bestie Laura Parnes got a Creative Capital grant,too, to continue production on her very exciting new "multi platform" film Tour Without End which promises to prominently feature Seagull staff and other VIPs, notably K8 Hardy. Which brings me to some crucial news about our muse: K8's Outfitumentary is eligible for the Bright Future award at... ROTTERDAM!  And on that high note, I'll sign off. HAPPY NEW YEAR! xoxo Johanna

Marilyn Minter: Pretty/Dirty

Despite being on view at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH), Marilyn Minter: Pretty/Dirty is definitely Seagull Salon blog material: Minter is art royalty and an inspiration to the salon. And I was lucky enough to be down in Houston to revel in Minter's three decade exploration in painting, photography, and video. 

Minter's early painting studies and student photographs of her Southern recluse mother lounging and primping open Pretty/Dirty...

...before showing Minter fully embrace the glamorous vs. the grotesque themes central to her work. 

Minter's work is messy yet slick. She's making jokes but asking questions, too. 

Why might these images be seen as disturbing to some? The details one might find to be jarring in her work are actually not if you think about it, as the "grotesque" aspects are usually nothing more than a pimple or messy nail polish application or overgrown pubic hair. The imperfections allowed to exist in these glossy photographs are actually interferences with the mainstream idealized concepts of beauty seen in glossy magazines. What is typically edited out of a photo then becomes vital to Minter's work. 

And it's when Minter fully commits to her pretty/dirty aesthetic that the work really comes to life. The colors become more vibrant and glossy, too, which is no surprise: she is letting her creativity run wild with her subject matter. Saying the CAHM show is beautiful would be an understatement. The works hang huge on the wall and are fun to look at because Minter is having fun with her work.

Marilyn Minter: Pretty/Dirty is a fantastic glimpse of a visionary at work. Go see it at the CAMH or Colorado or California---or Brooklyn when it comes to NYC next year!
